What foods can’t guinea pigs eat?

There are a range of foods that at best have no nutritional value and cause diarrhoea in your guinea pigs, to potentially being very gassy and messing with their digestive systems, to being choking hazards or are just downright poisonous for your cute guinea pigs.

 

 

 

To ensure your guinea pigs remain happy and healthy, below is a list of foods that must not be given to your cute guinea pig:

  • alcohol
  • avocado
  • beans
  • beetroot
  • biscuits
  • bread
  • bulk plants
  • cabbage (of any sort)
  • cauliflower
  • cereals
  • corn or corn kernels
  • buttercups
  • cereals
  • chocolate, coffee (or anything containing caffeine –
  • clover or Lucerne (Alfalfa) hays
  • corn
  • dairy products
  • garden shrubs
  • grains
  • iceberg lettuce
  • lily of the valley
  • meat
  • non-guinea pig food, e.g. hamster, gerbil or rabbit food – they may all be small animals but they have different digestive systems
  • nuts
  • onion grass
  • onions
  • peas
  • potato tops or peelings
  • processed or fired foods
  • raw beans
  • rhubarb leaves
  • seeds
  • spices
  • spinach leaves
  • sugar
  • sweets
